The energy audit according to DIN EN 16247-1 is the basic level of an energy management system and maps the legal requirements for an energy and climate system analysis. One goal of auditing in the climate sector according to DIN EN 16247-1 is to significantly reduce CO2 consumption and to create transparency for consumers and costs in order to use energy more efficiently. This is aimed at making better use of new and regenerative technologies such as photovoltaics and wind power.

For large companies with 250 full-time employees or more, and/or with more than 50 million euros in annual sales, or alternatively 43 million euros in total assets, in the manufacturing and nonmanufacturing sectors, there has been a legal obligation to carry out this audit since 2015.
